Maldives, as an archipelagic country, Velana International Airport is the only international airport in Maldives. It is located on the airport island 2 kilometers North-east of the capital Male Island and is the gateway to Maldives. With the continuous development of tourism in Maldives, the annual passenger throughput of 4 million, airports has already been saturated, which has seriously affected the economic and social development of Maldives, the scale of airport urgently needs expansion. In order to realize Maldives national dream of building; a new runway parallel to the original runway, the flight zone grade is upgraded from 4E to 4F, which meets the use requirements of class F aircraft such as A380, further enhances the service capacity of the airport, inserts a pair of wings for the country, and enables the Republic of Maldives to achieve an all-round leap.
In 2017, the Maldives government officially launched the reconstruction and expansion project of Velana International Airport. Through the new technology of land reclamation (coral sand), the F-type runway, taxiway, apron, supporting cargo buildings, oil depots and bank protection projects were constructed to meet the requirements of A380 aircraft. The new runway is 3400m long, blast pad and runway end safety area of 300 meters at both ends of the north and south, with a total length of 4000 meters, of which the existing land area is 1000 meters. The other areas are new reclamation areas. After completion, the Maldives airport runway will become a beautiful scenery inlaid in the Indian Ocean. The performance and quality of the airport runway both exceed international standards.
Beijing Jinghangan Airport Engineering Co. Ltd. undertook navigational lighting system and supporting facilities for the runway and taxiway in the newly built flight area of the airport ( Including CAT I precision approach light system at the north and south end of the new runway) the lighting system transformation project involved in the conversion of the existing runway to parallel taxiway, the East-West apron lighting and the electrical system for aircraft operation, and the navigational lighting monitoring system project. Flight area communication and navigation engineering, flight area security system engineering, new North-South two light substations in the power system and supporting facilities. The construction period for the construction is 26 months, from July 2017 to September 2019.
